2002 Volunteer Leader Training Guide
This Is 4-H
Advocacy Situations
Handout 2

Situation #1

You have received a letter from your county Extension agent - 4-H stating that the proposed Federal budget includes a 50 percent reduction in Federal funding of the Extension Service. The letter asks you to inform your 4-H club and to organize a letter writing campaign.

Your Task

Be prepared to act out this situation to the entire group. How do you explain the impact of this reduction upon 4-H? Who should the letters be written to? What should be the content of the letters? Who else could you involve besides your 4-H club?

Situation #2

You are at a school music concert and Mrs. Jones approaches you. Mrs. Jones has 3 children and the oldest, Jenny, has just turned 8. Jenny is a member of the Brownies and also wants to join 4-H. Mrs. Jones only wants Jenny to join one organization. She asks you several questions about 4-H to help her choose which organization to allow Jenny to join.

Your Task

Be prepared to act out this situation to the entire group. What would you tell Mrs. Jones? What is unique about 4-H? What opportunities does 4-H offer that Brownies or Girl Scouts does not? How can you convince Mrs. Jones to become a 4-H family?
