2002 Volunteer Leader Training Guide
Conducting a 4-H Skillathon
Station Facilitator's Role
Handout 1

The key to a great skillathon activity lies with the station facilitators. Both the facilitator and participant will have fun and learn when the following responsibilities are completed:

  1. Decide on your station topic. Decide the project skill and the life skill to be targeted.
     

  2. Become familiar with the topic.
     

  3. Develop several questions to ask.
     

  4. Allow the team members to discover for themselves how to accomplish the task, instead of telling or showing them how.
     

  5. Facilitate the learning situation for each team in the following manner:

  • Share: Ask the participants questions such as: "What happened?" "What was hardest for you to do?" "How did you go about deciding how to accomplish the task?"
     

  • Process: "What's important?" "What did you learn from this activity that you did not know before?" "What did you learn about working with others?"
     

  • Generalize: "So what?" "How does what you have learned in this activity compare to something you have done before?" "Why is it important to (refer to the targeted life skill here)?"
     

  • Apply: "Now what?" "What did you learn about (targeted life skill or project skill) that will help you in the future?" "If you were going to do this activity again, what aspects of (targeted life or project skill) would you do differently?"
