2001 Volunteer Leader Training Guide
Your Guide to Financial Fitness: February

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
1 Payday! Learn the first rule of saving. Pay yourself first. Start making a savings payment. 2 Name your financial goals. Make a priority list. How much will each cost? 3 Do you have a budget? If not, start one now. Review each month or two. Keep it up-to-date.
4 Change the oil in your car. A new engine is an expense you don’t need. 5 Plan a don’t spend on any new items month if you know you can’t make it until next payday. 6 ___ days until Christmas. Budget for gifts. Start shopping for the best values. 7 Get a copy of your credit report, if you want to buy a car or house in a few months. 8 Trim variable expenses. Review phone and cable bills. Do you really need call waiting? 9 Cut your meal cost in half. Do you really need to eat out? 10 Make some extra cash by having a yard sale. One person’s trash is another’s treasure!
11 Start a vacation fund for next summer. Put some fun in your savings. 12 Keep credit and ATM cards safe. Make a list of account numbers and emergency 800 numbers. 13 Start a piggy bank. Save all coins each day. Use for a spending goal or emergency. 14 Make a spending calendar for periodic expenses. How much should you hold back each month to pay these variable expenses?  15 Paying only the minimum on a credit card is costly! Ask your county Extension office about Power Payments. 16 Keep your cars for 10 years rather than trading every 3 and save $100,000 in your working life! 17 Don’t give Uncle Sam an interest-free loan. If you expect a big refund, reduce your salary withholding.
18 Before going to the video or book store, check out what’s available for free at the local library! 19 Add your savings for emergency use. Do you have enough to cover a 6- to 12-week layoff? 20 What’s the interest rate on your credit cards? Shop around for a lower rate card. 21 Consider a mutual fund as a saving option. Look for one without commission fees. 22 Bank account charges vary a lot from bank to bank. Shop around for one with no or low fees. 23 Save on baby sitting by starting a baby sitting co-op. 24 Instead of going out to eat, plan a potluck supper with friends.
25 Feeding the ducks or a picnic in the park is a fun, low cost weekend entertainment. 26 Make money management a family affair. Talk about financial goals and priorities. 27 Reduce fuel bills. Raise the thermostat in the summer; lower it in the winter. 28 No money left? Plan next month’s spending before you cash your next paycheck.
