Handout 2

Printer Friendly Version (PDF) Printer Friendly Version (PDF)

By reading the food label, you can learn valuable information about the product. Information such as:

  • How many servings a food package contains and how much food makes a serving.

  • The total number of calories in the food and how many of those are from fat.

  • The amount of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol in the product.

  • The amount of sodium in the food. Serve a variety of foods that include fresh foods without added sodium.

  • The amount of total carbohydrate, dietary fiber and sugar in the food. By checking the amount of sugar in a food, you can choose foods that contain less.

  • The amount of protein in the food. By checking this information, you can determine if a food is a good protein source.

  • The percentage of the body’s daily need for certain nutrients found in a serving of the food. Only vitamins A and C and the minerals iron and calcium are listed. These are the nutrients most likely to be lacking in the American diet.

  • The amounts of certain nutrients adults need each day.
