1999 Volunteer Leadership Training Guide
Working with Committees
Case Studies
Activity 2

Printer Friendly VersionPrinter Friendly Version (PDF)

You and the other members of your committee attended a state conference and heard about a fantastic program another county is doing. You all agree it would work great in your county and would be terrific for your organization. On your trip home the committee decides that two representative should go and visit the other county and see the project in action.

What steps should your committee take to see the project through?

A controversial issue regarding a matter which affects your county has been discussed in the committee meeting. You know some members in your club will be in support of the issue and others will not. You are NOT in support. However, the committee votes to take action on the issue and the rest of the committee votes yes and you vote no.

What should you do?
What should you not do?

A county committee chair calls you to express concern about the lack of support he/she is receiving form their county officers. The county officer (according to the chair) does not support the programs and projects of the committee and discourages them from getting involved in community events.

The chair is asking your advice about what to do.

What advice would you give?
What role should you play?

You have some new county committee chairs who will be attending their first state conference. They have a variety of insecurities, such as their lack of knowledge on the issues that will discussed, speaking in front of a group, time required and the responsibility of being committee chair.

List ten things you can do before and at the first meeting that will make those new members feel secure, give them some leadership skills and learn how to carry out their responsibilities.
