The Farm is Not a Playground  Animated picture of grain harvester.

Farms are businesses that require the use of heavy and dangerous machinery. Every year many children die and thousands are injured in farm accidents. Typically these accidents are caused by farm equipment, especially tractors. Children are also victims of incidents involving livestock, tools, electrical components, and ATVs.

  • Stay away from pesticides, equipment fluids, and other household or farm chemicals.

  • Chemical storage areas are "off limits" and not play areas.

  • Do not play around farm equipment, especially grain wagons, even if they are turned off or empty.

  • Make sure your parents give you a designated play area on the farm.

  • Tractors and ATVs are made for one person. Never ride on one with another person.

  • Always wear a helmet when riding an ATV.

  • Scout for hazards when riding an ATV and stay off of paved roads.

  • Never enter a fenced area without your parent's permission or supervision.Image of a cow grazing in the field.

  • Watch out for electrical power lines and older electrical equipment.

  • Stay away from manure pits and ponds.
