4-H ATV Safety Training

In Arkansas, we have trained 16 University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service county agents and state faculty as ASI-licensed instructors to deliver the ASI ATV RiderCourse to counties and communities in each of our three Extension districts. Our goals for this program include the following:

  • Provide hands-on training to over 500 youth and adult participants.
  • Provide the educational components needed to develop critical thinking skills and good decision-making skills.
  • Change ATV-related behaviors.
  • Reduce ATV-related injuries and deaths.

About the ATV Safety Institute 4-H ATV RiderCourse Training

This hands-on, half-day 4-H ATV RiderCourse is conducted by licensed ATV Safety Institute instructors. The course offers students the following:

  • An opportunity to increase safety knowledge.
  • Practice in basic riding skills in a controlled environment under the direct supervision of a licensed Instructor.
  • A pre-ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping and swerving and riding over obstacles.
  • Information about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and environmental concerns.

Taking an ATV RiderCourse results in the following benefits for participants:

  • Improves riding skills
  • Builds confidence
  • Gets kids started right
  • Provides a great way to meet other riders
  • Teaches how to “tread lightly”

The 4-H ATV RiderCourse is a great way to get your kids and you off to a safe start. A parent must be present for riders under 12; parents are encouraged to be present for riders under 16.

How much does it cost?

The ATV Safety Institute has valued the 4-H ATV RiderCourse at $75 for each youth 6–15 years of age and $125 per person for those over 15. However, the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service 4-H ATV Safety Program does not charge for this training because of our grant. However, a small user fee may be charged to cover expenses such as equipment and facility use.

Do I Use My Own ATV?

Yes, you may use your own ATV.  However, if you don't have an ATV of the appropriate size, you may make specific arrangements and one will be made available at the training site.

What Should I Bring?

You must wear the proper riding gear at all times during training. Please bring the following:

  • DOT-approved motorcycle helmet
  • Goggles or face shield
  • Over-the-ankle boots
  • Sturdy gloves
  • Long pants
  • Long-sleeved shirt or jacket

(If you need specific gear, you may contact the instructor, and it will be provided.)
