4-H ATV Safety

Picture of a blue A T V The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Youth Development Program is offering youth and parents the opportunity to learn about ATV safety thanks to grants awarded by National 4-H Council as part of the 4-H ATV Safety Grant Program. The program is a collaboration among local 4-H groups, the national 4-H Youth Development Program and the ATV Safety Institute (ASI).

The following are facts that every parent should read:

Serious ATV injuries affect more than 100,000 people each year in the United States.
The state of Arkansas averages more than 15 ATV-related deaths per year and has one of the nation’s highest rates of injury for those 16 and under.
Close to 90 percent of ATV crashes in Arkansas occur with drivers under age 16 driving an adult-sized ATV (the engine size is greater than 90 cubic centimeters).
In 2006, 79 patients were admitted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital with serious ATV-related injuries.
Recent research demonstrates that children under 16 continue to suffer a disproportionate share of injuries, do not wear helmets and fail to receive formal ATV training.
Every child under 16 should be supervised and should never be permitted to ride an adult-sized ATV.

Summer marks a time when children have more free time to enjoy many activities, including riding ATVs. Children under 16 must be supervised at all times when operating an ATV. Parents literally hold the keys to their children’s safety. Every ATV has an ignition key, and when a parent or guardian controls the key, he or she controls the use.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Youth Development Program and the ATV Safety Institute encourage families to learn more about ATV safety as they prepare for a safe, fun summer.
