Money - How and Where to Get It

Cartoon of Chris and Connie. The Cash Kids say first you have to get money. Do you know where your money comes from? Money can be used to get the things you need or want. Kids usually get money from their parents (or grandparents or whoever cares for you and helps you make decisions), or by earning it. You may also get money by receiving allowances or gifts and sometimes, by selling things.

An allowance is your share of the family income. You and your parents decide several things:

Dollar Sign How much the allowance will be

Dollar Sign What it will be used for

Dollar SignHow often you will get your allowance.

How You Get Money

If you get an allowance, you will need to plan your spending so your money will last until you receive another allowance.

There may be jobs at home or in your neighborhood that you could do to get money. What are some things YOU could do?

You may get money as a gift for your birthday or other special occasion. You can use this money now to buy something or you could save it and buy something later.

Where Do You Get Your Money?

To learn more about getting money, ask your parents, grandparents, uncles or aunts or another older person these questions:

  • How did they get their spending money when they were your age?
  • What did they buy?
  • Where did they go to spend their money?
  • What could they buy with that amount of money today?
