4-H Outdoors Resources
- 4-H Project Books - Self-guided activity books for 4-Hers based on the experiential learning
model in which youth learn by doing before being told or shown how. Youth
reflect on what they did and what it means to them. Youth who complete project
books receive recognition for what they learned. Contact your county Extension
office for an order form, or Darlene
Millard
(501-671-2064) for details.
- Projects WILD, WET, and Learning Tree - Adult leaders, Extension faculty,
and teachers attend workshops and receive
free books of easy-to-use activities for 4-H Clubs, such as "Oh Deer"
and "Let the Cattail Out of the Bag." Contact Shannon Caldwell at
(501) 821-4444 for details about Project WILD and WET, and
Suzanne Hirrel
(501-671-2288) about Project Learning Tree.
- Fire Ant Education - Children are naturally curious, and fire ants are naturally aggressive -- put
the two together and that spells trouble. The fire ant education program teaches
youth about the biology and hazards of fire ants. Support materials include
stickers "Fire Ants Are A Part Of Our World," a coloring book
"The Hidden Truth About Red Imported Fire Ants," and a video
"Imported Fire Ants: A Youth Perspective." Contact your
county
Extension office for details.
- Arkansas Stream Team - 4-H clubs can adopt a stream and help control
litter, work on streambank stabilization projects, improve fish habitat, and/or
monitor water quality. Contact
Steve Filipek or John Hogue at the
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission
(1-877-847-2690 or 501-847-1869) for details.
- GPS Units Available for Check-out - Garmin GPS III+
personal navigator units are available on loan for county Extension staff to
teach adult leaders and 4-H clubs mapping, orienteering, and navigation
skills. A GPS curriculum is currently being developed and will be available
soon. Call your local
county
Extension office or Mike Daniels
(501-671-2281) for details.
- Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs - This school-based aquatic education program targets students in the 5th-8th
grades. Participating teachers are encouraged to incorporate outside resources
through avenues such as the 4-H program. Contact your
county Extension office or
Gordon Bagby at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (501-223-6313) for
details.
- T.E.N.T. (Traveling Educational Nature Trailer) - Are you and your club complete novices in the outdoors? Arkansas State Parks
offers a program which, for a minimal fee, a park interpreter will assist a
group of 15 - 30 with an outdoor camping experience. A trailer of equipment is
provided containing binoculars, tents, backpacks, eating and cooking utensils,
fishing rods, and interpretive books -- everything except food, ice, water, and
a bedroll. Contact the state park nearest you, or Steven Clifft at Arkansas
State Parks (501-682-2187) for details.
- Little Rock ALIVE - Little Rock Parks and Recreation Program offers several classes in outdoor
activities from rock climbing, to backpacking, to caving. A fee is charged.
Contact Andy Cadel (501-375-5685) for more information.
