Outdoor Education Tracks - School Programs

Our classes have been conveniently organized into outdoor educational tracks, including several classes of similar subject, to help teachers focus their student’s experience on a particular area of outdoor education.

Outdoor Skills Track

Picture of youth sitting next to a shelter built out of branches. Are your students uncomfortable in outdoor settings? Do they seem lost when it comes to the outdoors? Or would they love the chance to gain knowledge of principles of outdoor survival? Well what ever the case, help them find their way and give them a dose of confidence in our Outdoor Skills Track. Participants in this track will learn how to navigate using a compass on our orienteering course, learn and demonstrate basic survival shelter building, and learn the importance of focus and clear communication as they shoot arrows at their targets on our archery range.

Team Challenge Track

Picture of a girl climbing a rock wall.Want to foster a spirit of togetherness in your classroom? Want to challenge your students to work together to solve problems? This track is for you. Your students will work together to achieve goals and take on tasks as they experience our Team Challenge program. Through carefully chosen activities and initiatives, your students will learn the value of team work and group decision making. In this track, your students will also learn the fundamentals of canoeing on our 6 acre lake as they strive to communicate effectively and work together as they navigate their vessel. Your students will also have the opportunity to reach for their goal on our rock climbing wall as their classmates work together to keep them secure as they climb.

Water Track

Picture of youth fishing on the bank of a pondWho doesn’t like to play in the water? Bring your students to discover what lives beneath the surface as they explore our waterways. Students participating in this track will learn about environmental indicators that can tell us about the health of our ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers as they sample sections of our stream for macro-invertebrates and other small creatures. They will learn basic fish anatomy and have an up-close opportunity with some underwater organisms as they try to catch and identify some of Arkansas’ sport fish. Finally, your students will learn that water is one of our most important resources as they discover how our choices affect the availability of clean water for plants, animals and people.

Woods and Wildlife Track

Picture of a turtleNothing captivates the attention of students much like a walk in the woods or an up-close experience with wildlife. Students participating in this track will explore the woods on an instructor-led hike and take part in activities designed to develop and enhance their understanding of a forest as a place where many unique and interesting plants and animals live. They will come to understand the forest as an eco-system where the balance and interdependence of the organisms living there is critical to maintaining a healthy forest. Students will be encouraged to explore their surroundings with their senses and in the process become more aware of the forest as a complex system of living things, not just a bunch of trees. Finally, students will learn about some of the wildlife that inhabit our forests by investigating the different characteristics of some of their skins, skulls and tracks.
