Wildlife Habitat Education Program
Wildlife Training Boxes

Wildlife training boxes are available for loan to county agents on a first-come, first-served basis from the Forest Resources Unit. There are at least three 4-H wildlife identification contests currently underway. Annual WHEP and O-Rama events are limited to announced regions with associated species each year. The training boxes for WHEP and O-Rama will contain study species for that given year.

Available training boxes for WHEP and Wildlife O-Rama are:

  1. skulls
  2. furs (pelts)
  3. replicas of scat, tracks and eggs, and Bird Song Identiflyer©
  4. wildlife foods
  5. resources (reference books)

An additional “Show and Tell” box of furs and skulls not being used for WHEP or O-Rama is available to county agents for 4-H Shooting Sports training and other uses, such as youth education days or county fairs.

IMPORTANT: County agents are responsible for replacing unreturned items. Normal “wear and tear” is expected, but all items must be returned. Items which are not replaced within 30 days will result in the responsible county agent being charged a minimum $50 replacement fee (or replacement cost if more than $50).

Note that often there is little opportunity for the Forest Resources Unit to check for missing items between loans. Therefore, immediately upon receiving a box, inventory the items. If any items are missing, report to the Forest Resources Unit immediately. The agent who previously checked the box will be responsible for item replacement.

Check Out Procedures

County agents can reserve training boxes from the Forest Resources Unit located at the Little Rock State Office by calling 501-671-2329 or 501-671-2197. Indicate which training box(es) you need and dates for pick up and return. There is no limit to the number of boxes you can check out. From January–June, a two-week turnaround is required when demand is high for 4-H WHEP and O-Rama boxes. The Show and Tell box is available for a maximum of four weeks.
