4-H Journal Questions and Answers

Question 1 - HELP! The Arkansas 4-H Report Form has changed - or has it?

Answer 1 - Yes, The Arkansas 4-H Report Form/Record Book is now referred to as the Arkansas 4-H Journal. This re-structure will take place in 2006 for the 2007 4-H Journal judging. There are now four levels of journal guidelines: Cloverbud (5-8), Beginner (9-12), Intermediate (13-15), and Advanced (16-19).

Question 2 - What are the guidelines for the four levels of Journals?

Answer 2 - All four levels have specific guidelines. These guidelines are included with each report form which can be downloaded from the web-site or obtained in the county office.

Question 3 - When are the journals due in the state office?

Answer 3 - The journals are due to the state office by the first working day in February. NOTE: Check with your county office for county deadlines.

Question 4 - Will journals be disqualified?

Answer 4 - NO! No journal submitted to the state 4-H office will be disqualified. The state office will review the journals and will deduct penalty points for the following: extra pages in story, extra photograph pages, or extra pages added to the report form - 5 points for each. (15 points max). Font too small - 5 points. Failure to use proper margins - 5 points.

Question 5 - What is the “proper” size of type?

Answer 5 - Type must be no smaller than 12 characters per inch (10 points in printer’s measure). The preferred font is 12 pt Times New Roman. To be sure of size, use a ruler, measure off one inch, and count the number of characters, including spaces. If you have more than 12 characters and spaces in an inch, your type is too small!

Question 6 - We’ve heard that there will be a change in scholarships for Advanced Journal winners. What’s the story?

Answer 6 - Beginning with the Advanced Record Book winners named in 2000: Advanced Journal winners will need to apply for Category B scholarships (available to current or former state advanced journal winners only) the year they are a graduating high school senior. To be eligible for these scholarships, graduating high school seniors or those already in college or a post-secondary institution, MUST submit a completed scholarship application (due Feb. 1) and must have submitted an application to the college or institution of higher learning of their choice.

NOTE: If an advanced winner is applying for a journal scholarship in a year AFTER the year they are named a journal winner they will only submit a scholarship application.

Answer 7 - Journals will be judged against the following:

Cloverbud - judged at the county level and scored.

Beginner - Project work - 40 pts; leadership - 15 pts; community service - 15 pts; awards and recognition, 4-H marketing, offices and committee assignments, and experiences in other organizations - 10 pts; 4-H story/pictures - 20 pts; and project book - 5 bonus pts (if completed).
