Dr. Darlene Millard – State 4-H Leader

Many people don’t know it, but Arkansas 4-H is about to be 100 years old. Just imagine, 100 years of helping young people in this state learn life skills and prepare for their future.

We’d like for you to be a part of our centennial celebration. We have an entire year planned of celebrations and festivities and we want you to feel a part of that.

You know the Arkansas 4-H program for the last 100 years, and we hope for at least 100 more years, has been in every county in the state of Arkansas, so that means there’s a 4-H program next to you.

Well, you may be wondering, “How can I be a part of our centennial celebration?” Well, really, that’s going to be pretty easy, because starting the first of October, we will be having centennial celebration kickoffs all around the state, so there will be one near you I promise.

We’ll have bike races, we’re going to have 5k’s, we’re going to have all kinds of county celebrations, contests, even a 4-H day with the Arkansas Razorbacks. So you see, there’s all kinds of ways that you can be involved in the 4-H program.

You know 4-H started because there was a real need way back in the early 1900’s, the farmer’s needed to know new methods for raising their crops. And the farmers weren’t real eager to learn about that so they started working with young people with corn clubs.

4-H actually began in White County Arkansas in Searcy. And from there it just spread and spread until, as I said before, 4-H is everywhere! We’re no longer just about farming, although that is very, very important. But our young people do everything from raising livestock, to rocketry, and all kinds of things.

So, why don’t you help us celebrate the centennial and join in one of the great festivities? Matter of fact, if you were a 4-H member, sign onto our website and sign up as an alumni. Or, if you’re just a young person and you would like to be involved in 4-H, we want you in our program, so contact your county extension office and you too can be a part of Arkansas 4-H. Come on, help us celebrate!
