Military Adventure Camps

Arkansas is pleased to offer two camps serving military youth age 14 - 18, funded by the Department of Defense and the National Institute for Food and Agriculture. 

1) High Adventure Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness Area, a premier backcountry outdoor hiking experience.  There will be one crew of 8 military youth, adult instructors/chaperones, and a Military Family Life Consultant.  For information, contact Shannon Caldwell, scaldwell@uaex.edu, 501-821-6884.  See registration link below.

Two preparatory events lead to the July 26 - August 3 backpacking trip

  • Parent Camper Rally, March 5 - C.A. Vines 4-H Center, 1 Four H Way, Little Rock, AR  72223.  The information from this rally will be available in a video format for late registrants. 
     
  • Shakedown, April 1 - 3 - C.A. Vines 4-H Center.
    This is a weekend practice for what participants will experience on the actual backpacking trip. This experiential learning process will help participants be better prepared for 5-days in the New Mexico backcountry.

    Subjects Covered: Basic First-Aid (this is not a certification, just basic knowledge), backcountry safety, setting up camp, hiking and backpacking, outdoor cooking, teambuilding, how to pack a pack, what is "crew gear" and how is it used,  “leave no trace.””
     
  • Pecos Wilderness Trip:

    July 26-27 -  Depart C.A. Vines 4-H Center, Travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico
    July 28 - Hit the trail
    August 1 - Come off trail  (5 days / 4 nights on trail)
    August 1-2  - Spent in Amarillo, Texas
    August 3 - Arrive back in Arkansas

2) Camo Camp, August 1 - 5:  Serving up to 40 children age 14 - 18, this camp will take place at the C.A. Vines 4-H Center.  Activities include teamwork, leadership building through low and high ropes course elements, ATV Safety training and driving course, shooting sports safety instruction, cardboard boat building and racing, camp Olympics, campfire, and recreational swimming and other camp activities.  To see the C.A. Instructions for registering through Arkansas 4-H Online are available at:  operation_military_kids/get_started.pdf. Create one profile for the entire family.  You will then be able to register family members online.  Each camp link will include health forms and waivers to be printed out and completed.
